about

30 years ago today, or thereabouts, Kurt Cobain sat in his home in Washington and decided to end his life. We didn’t find out for a few days but for us GenXers who loved Nirvana it was gutting and I still feel it even now.

I’ve never been a stereotypical man and Kurt was one of the few men in the limelight that was happy to shed all the macho crap and that resonated with me hugely.

I’ve performed many songs of his, in bands and without, before and after his death, and his music maybe means more to me than any other artist.
It’s very odd looking back now though, because 27 seemed so old and so adult back when I was 17 and now it doesn’t seem much more than a kid.

Anyway, I wrote a song about him and about that.

lyrics

I was still small
Yeah I don't recall
John Lennon being shot in New York

But I know where I was
In April '94
When we heard that they found you
Laid out on the floor

They quote John as saying
There's no art without pain
Though I don't know if he really thought that

But if pain is the price
For what you put in our lives
Well I guess that we bled you pretty damn dry

We watched you hurt, hurt, hurt
Aberdeen boy
We watched you hurt, hurt, hurt
Aberdeen boy

You were ten years my senior
And I hard believed
You had all of this shit figured out

Now I've got twenty years
On the time you had here
And I think you were more lost than I was

There's rose-tinted glasses
When somebody passes
And I don't know if I'd feel the same

If you'd been allowed
To fade, not burn out
But I wish you'd been able to stay

And not just hurt, hurt, hurt
Aberdeen boy
And not just hurt, hurt, hurt
Aberdeen boy

I think that you'd think it was strange
The way that you've been venerated
I don't think that you wanted to be
A hero to them or to me

We were all mesmorised
By your frost sapphire eyes
And I don't think we thought to look deeper

Your words had the power
To feel like they were ours
Like we were all in on a secret

Your gift was a fire
And it burned you alive
For all that you gave us
The cost was too high

And then you were gone
We had candles and song
And we all tried to find what the fuck had gone wrong

And by then you no longer hurt, hurt, hurt
Aberdeen boy
You no longer hurt, hurt, hurt
Aberdeen boy
Ohhh Aberdeen boy
Ohhh Aberdeen boy
